The hour the land is most itself
First light is not a mood. It is the hour the Gulf is least explained, and a generation keeps returning to it.
There is an hour, before the heat takes the day, when the land here is most itself. The light is low and even, the colour drains toward grey and bone, and the place stops performing. A surprising amount of recent work returns to it.
Not a mood, a condition
It would be easy to call this atmosphere. It is closer to a condition: a time when description is possible because nothing is yet dramatic. The painters who go there are not after beauty so much as accuracy.
